Lotus 56
The Lotus 56 was a single seater racing car, designed and built to compete in the 1968 Indianapolis 500. The car had a turbine powered engine, which transmitted its power through a four wheel drive system. The turbine mated to 4wd was an ideal system for Indy as the turbine proided full torque from low revs and was made to maintain revs for an extended period.
There was a 56B variant made for Grand Prix racing. It did not prove as viable in the road courses as it did in the ovals. As Lotus would find the turbine did not do well with rapid deceleration and accelerations, forcing drivers to keep their foot on the throttle while braking to keep the revs up which resulted in many brake failures.
